Choose Wrought Iron Patio Furniture For Timeless Beauty

Wrought iron is a longtime favorite for patio furniture and accent pieces. It can be traditional, elegant or simply ornamental. Powder coating gives it a weather resistant finish that also enhances its beauty.  You can choose from a wide range of tables and chairs for entertaining or baker’s racks and plant stands for a decorative touch.

The term “wrought iron” means “worked iron”, it has been worked into a design, rather than cast, or molded.  The designs used for wrought iron furniture can be anywhere from simple, straight lines, to very ornate.  This type of outdoor furniture was made popular in the 1950s and has enjoyed continued success since then.

Wrought iron patio furniture is much heavier than most outdoor furniture, making it the perfect choice if you live in a windy area. In addition, its elegant appearance adds a timeless beauty and class to any outdoor setting for many years to come.

While you are shopping for your wrought iron outdoor furniture, there are some simple things you should keep in mind. As mentioned above, it is heavy so you’ll want to put it in one place and not be moving it around much. Also, the metal can become uncomfortable after sitting for long periods of time, so you should look for outdoor patio cushions that will fit in the chair seats.

Wrought iron patio furniture is the perfect choice when you want something that is elegant and long lasting, however, it is not completely maintenance free. If you purchase used patio furniture, you’ll need to determine what type of finish they have on them. If it is just paint or sealer, you’ll need to refinish them periodically to prevent rust.  You can extend the time between refinishes by taking care to touch up the places where the paint gets chipped, because this is where the rust will start forming first.

Refinishing your wrought iron patio furniture is not hard to do. Begin by cleaning away the loose paint and rust with steel wool and naval jelly. Since most wrought iron designs are very ornate, you’ll need to take extra care to get down into the cracks and crevices and clean them out, too. Rinse well when you’ve finished the cleaning and let it dry completely.

Re-paint with a good quality rust-resistant paint. You can use either spray cans, or apply it with a brush, being careful to be sure that every surface is covered. After the paint is completely dry, finish with a coat of sealer for additional protection.

Harsh winter weather can be brutal on your wrought iron furniture. If you have room, the best thing to do is to store it indoors for the winter. However, not everyone has the room, or the ability to move the furniture, so the next best thing is to invest in good quality patio furniture covers. Measure your table and chairs and shop carefully to get covers that fit well and will protect your investment when you aren’t using it.

Newer versions of wrought iron furniture are now powder coated instead of painted. This is a process where the metal is electrostatically charged, and then a special powder substance is sprayed over every inch of the surface, top and bottom. It is then “cooked” to form a coating that completely encases the metal, protecting it from rust and weather damage.

Powder coating has been around for many years, but only in the last few has it become more common for outdoor furniture. The available color choices alone are enough to make you want to choose powder coating over paint, but its major benefit is that it will make your wrought iron furniture practically maintenance free. You’ll still need to guard against chips in the surface, but it is much, much harder to chip or crack a powder-coated surface than a painted one. Plus, you can take the cushions off, lean the chairs against the table so the water doesn’t stand on them, and store the entire set in place over the winter. A properly cared for set of powdered-coated wrought iron patio furniture is something that you will use and enjoy for several decades.
